GIF is an important graphics format that was developed more than 30 years ago. It became widely used because it had more versatile features compared to other existing formats of that time. It was one of the first image formats with animation support.
GIF, in full graphics interchange format, digital file format devised in 1987 by the Internet service provider CompuServe as a means of reducing the size of images and short animations.
